APPG Vision
In a world where the news is increasingly dominated by terms like ‘tariffs’, ‘regulatory alignment’ and ‘trade blocs’, the UK’s position in the world – both as a diplomatic and as a trading force - has rarely been under such scrutiny. Amidst this context, we have formed the International Trade & Investment All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG), a key forum for dialogue between parliamentarians and the business community. Through our work, we aim to foster meaningful collaboration with key industry stakeholders, seeking to position the UK as a beacon of opportunity for international trade and investment.
We are guided by a fundamental belief: that the UK is open for business and eager to strengthen its global economic partnerships. Our role, as a group, is to help turn this belief into action – by working hand-in-hand with industry experts, identifying the challenges faced by businesses, and ensuring that the UK remains competitive on the global stage.
Our APPG is more than just a space for discussion. There are already many brilliant forums which effectively scrutinise government policy, such as the Business and Trade Committee. However, what this APPG provides is both an additional vehicle for international and domestic relationship-building and also a platform for tangible, forward-thinking solutions, providing the space to consider policies beyond those which are already under consideration.
To guide our efforts, we have identified four key workstreams, each essential in shaping the future of UK trade and investment:
Resilient Borders and Supply Chains
In a world increasingly defined by uncertainty, we must ensure that our borders remain resilient and that our supply chains are robust. With challenges like geopolitical tensions, changing trade rules, and disruptions from global events, maintaining smooth and secure trade flows is more crucial than ever. Digitalisation of borders presents a huge opportunity for enhancing the speed and security of goods flow.International Trade Relationships
As the UK reflects on its place in the world, it is vital that we build and strengthen our international trade relationships. Whether it’s strengthening existing agreements and relationships or pursuing new trade deals, these relationships will be the bedrock upon which we build our economic future.Small Business Support
Small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, accounting for around 99% of the business population. However, only around 10-11% export. There is huge growth potential in actively supporting these businesses to grow through export and seeing international trade as a natural part of doing business. From easing access to global markets to providing tailored advice, we must ensure that our small businesses are equipped to grow, innovate, and compete on the world stage.Identifying and Tackling Challenges to Investment
Investment is the engine which drives growth. Yet, attracting investment requires more than just a welcoming message; it requires an in-depth understanding of the barriers businesses face. From regulatory hurdles to infrastructure gaps, we must work to identify and address the challenges that stand in the way of sustained investment. We must also work to ensure that these benefits are spread over the entirety of the UK, reducing regional disparities. From Northampton to Newry to Nenthon, Teesside to Tenby to Trafford, economic benefits must reach far and wide in order to achieve meaningful growth.

The UK has a proud trading history and incredible strengths, from the goods we produce which are in demand all over the world, to the services exports which last year shot the UK to the position of being the world’s fourth largest exporter. With such a rich history and clear advantages, the APPG has a pivotal role to play in supporting this trajectory, signalling to the business community that the UK is not just open for business, but actively working to create a competitive, sustainable and progressive trade environment.
